Lord of the Dance

breakdancing jesus 008

Something else I was lucky enough to find on a local street:  a splendid mural by Cosmo Sarson (standing on the right in the top photo) of a breakdancing Jesus! I saw it and took this photo with my phone on a grey day this week; but I can’t wait to see all that gold sparkle in the sunshine!  Another excellent addition to the street art of Stokes Croft, Bristol’s Bohemian Quarter.
Only a five minute walk North from the Bus Station; easy to find, right outside The Canteen and directly opposite Banksy’s Mild, Mild West;
well worth a good look, especially while it’s fresh and unspoilt.

These atoms whirling through the world
Are nothing but madmen!
Can’t you see them dancing
Lost, dazzled in him?

One day in your wineshop I drank a little wine
And threw off the robe of this body:
I knew, drunk on you, this world is harmony-
Creation, destruction, I’m dancing for them both.

Rumi, translated by Andrew Harvey,
from Love’s Fire, Recreations of Rumi

Jesus can transform a drunkard into gold.
If the drunk is already golden,
he can be changed to pure diamond.
If already that, then the circling planets,
Jupiter, Venus, the Moon.

Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks, from The Big Red Book

Dance, when you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance when you’re perfectly free.

Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks, from The Essential Rumi
