Rock Face

Three versions of a curiously skull-like rock
I picked up many moons ago.
Pencil Rock-Face is contemplating a quotation
from Franz Kafka that I found in
Jed McKenna’s ‘Spiritual Warfare’.

The books we need are the kind that act upon us
like a misfortune, that make us suffer like the death of someone we love more than ourselves,
that make us feel as though we were on
the verge of suicide, or lost in a forest
remote from all human habitation:-
a book should serve as an axe
for the frozen sea within us.

Pencil Rock-Face concludes that this was simply an adroit attempt on Kafka’s part at advertising the¬†challenging qualities of his own peculiar brand of literature. Maybe he has a point.
